Your Google Listing Was Claimed by Someone Else, Now What?

Imagine waking up to find that your top-ranking storefront on Google Maps is suddenly directing your loyal customers to a broken link, a competitor’s website, or worse a scammer’s phone number.

It sounds crazy, but it happens all the time.

If someone else has claimed or verified your Google Business listing under your name and address, your business is effectively being held hostage. Simply asking for ownership back through Google’s basic form is a start, but waiting around while someone else controls your digital front door can do serious damage fast.

What happens when someone takes over your listing:

When a malicious actor or an aggressive competitor takes control of your listing, they hold your online reputation and revenue hostage. If left unaddressed, here is what happens:

• They pocket your sales: They swap your phone number and website link with their own, siphoning off calls, leads, and paying customers right at the finish line.

• They trash your reputation: Whoever controls the profile can leave rude replies to customer reviews, post bogus business hours, or upload bizarre photos, destroying the trust you spent years building.

• They tell everyone you’re out of business: A hijacker can slap a "Permanently Closed" tag on your location. Within days, your search rankings plunge and customers assume you’ve shut down.

• You get trapped in Google’s red tape: If the hijacker denies your claim, you’re forced into Google’s brutal dispute process. If you don't submit the exact paperwork they want, Google’s automated system might just ban your business address for good.
